about us

Trident United Way can trace its roots to 1922, when the Social Services Exchange was established in Charleston to reduce duplication of services among non-profits and ease competition for resources. United Way's direct predecessor, the Community Chest, was established in 1944 to provide funds for non-profit agencies through one annual fundraising campaign.

In 1954 the organization became known as the United Fund, and in the early 1970s expanded to include Berkeley and Dorchester Counties, becoming Trident United Way.

Since then, Trident United Way has evolved from a fundraising organization into a community problem solver. Today, United Way determines the critical human issues facing the tri-county area and then goes about trying to solve them, principally by investing about $7.5 million in programs that change lives and improve our community.

The Lowcountry believes in Trident United Way’s strategic model. In the last six years fundraising has nearly doubled and the number of donors giving $1,000 or more has more than tripled. People want their charitable giving to have impact in our local community, and Trident United Way is giving them that.

Trident United Way is owned and operated by the people of the Lowcountry, represented by a volunteer Board of Directors and 200 Community Investment volunteers. Trident United Way operates according to the highest ethical standards. Our audited financial statements are available to anyone who requests them, at (843) 740-9000 or tuwc@tuw.org. Trident United Way is cost-effective, spending more than 88 cents of every dollar on programs and services.
